about

'Mdou Moctar concerts are charged with a decibel-pushing momentum, leading to ecstatic release through electric rock 'n' roll. This is a form Mdou and band excel within. But there's a softer energy in the group we don't often get to share. It's an interpretation of the earliest form of the Tuareg guitar tradition. Mixtape Vol. 6 focuses on the acoustic side of Mdou Moctar and band. I was brought to tears the first time I heard Mdou’s acoustic music. The tenderness and vulnerability in his beautiful voice knocked me out. The soulfulness of his guitar-playing is almost even more defined with an acoustic guitar, as the hardness of his picking dictates the song’s feel and volume. Knowing both the acoustic and electric songs, you can hear the depth of Mdou’s being. It feels as if there are two entirely different worlds inside of him, with each style bringing the other to light. Just as singers have preferred keys ranges, Mdou carefully considers songs for acoustic or electric treatment. One of Tuareg guitar music’s earliest functions was as a way to communicate the local news, as it were. Accompanied by acoustic guitar, lyrics would detail happenings around the country, in particular villages, and families within the communities. When Mdou plays an acoustic guitar and uses a pick, he calls it “old style.” As we rarely perform these kinds of sets live, this mixtape is a special glimpse into a little-heard aspect of the band. You’ll hear stripped-down sets featuring acoustic guitars, electric bass, doubled electric guitar, djembe, group clapping, and water jug percussion. Mdou sings about love, religion, Tuareg struggles, and politics within Niger and Africa. I hope you enjoy these songs, so many of which are written by and for tight-knit communities, which we need to cultivate now more than ever.' - Mikey
